We’re starting to learn what games comprise the 12 world premieres touted for The Game Awards this Friday — but a new entry in the Fallout series won’t be present at the show.
Publisher Bethesda Softworks took to Twitter yesterday to make the announcement that will likely disappoint many fans looking for another trip to the post-apocalyptic future. They’ll be represented at The Game Awards, but only to support Swedish studio MachineGames, developers of Best Narrative and Best Shooter nominee Wolfenstein: The New Order.
After Fallout 3 resuscitated the WRPG series in 2008, its sequel New Vegas was released two years later to widespread acclaim. Fans waited a decade between Fallout 2 and Fallout 3, and it’s clear that they’re not looking to repeat that hiatus ahead of the next game in the series.
Talk of a new Fallout game seems to rear its head every couple of months, with an announcement regarding the next game in the series expected ever since Bethesda’s released The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim as the latest iinstallmentin their other big RPG series back in 2011. While we’ve heard very little from those in the know, several hoaxes have made the wait all the more difficult for the Fallout faithful.
PSA — We're not showing anything at the Game Awards. We'll be there to support @MachineGames.

Last year, an elaborate hoax based around the Survivor 2299 website seemed to suggest that a new Fallout would be revealed at The Game Awards precursor VGX. However, its perpetrator later revealed that his intention was to force Bethesda to reveal their plans — something which did not occur.
However, the hoax served to further strengthen the association between the yearly awards show and Bethesda — which was forged thanks to Fallout 3 and Skyrim being unveiled in previous years. It certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see the publisher’s next game be revealed at a future ceremony, but Bethesda remain steadfast that they’ll have nothing to show this time around.
All this being said, the question remains; when will we see a new Fallout game? The jump to home consoles from PC has made the series more popular than ever before, so it would follow that a new entry would be in the works. Last year a tease from the voice actor who portrays ‘Three Dog’ seemed to suggest news was on its way, but that never materialized.
Common wisdom would suggest that we’ll see something of the Fallout series next year, but it’s difficult to gauge just how far into development the unannounced game will be at present. New hardware means there’s plenty of work to be done to make a new instalment worthy of the series’ pedigree — but it’s certainly preferable to a new entry being rushed out too quickly.
